Showcase Writing

When we were first informed that we had to write a “Personal Credo” to be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. I know this sounds weird, but I’ve never really been one to be opinionated or let others know how I really feel. Normally I just go with the flow and try to not let the negative things get to me too much. Now don’t get me wrong, I obviously have feelings and emotions, I just try not to let the whole world know what they are. In order for me to write this essay it required some serious thinking. “What are some things that really get on your nerves?” “What do you wish you could change about the world?” Once I started thinking about it this way the beliefs came easily. The one thing I have always felt strongly about is respecting others. Whether it be your parents, friends, teachers, boss… whoever. I think this essay really lets the reader know who I am as a person because it clearly outlines my beliefs. A few of them are kind of similar but I think that lets you know even more about me as a person. I obviously have no tolerance for those who are rude and disrespectful. So I guess I kind of came up with these individual beliefs based off of my one main belief. I am proud of this piece of writing, even if it is simple, and I know that these beliefs will remain with me for the rest of my life.

This piece was from the very first blog post we had to do. We had to find a quote and explain why we thought it should be considered good writing. Looking back at my writing I wouldn’t change a thing. I still agree with everything that I wrote. As I explained why I thought the Aristotle quote should be considered good writing, you can again see what a main belief of mine is. I believe that everyone should be treated equally no matter what size, color or age they are. I think this piece of writing really allowed me to take a quote with such deep meaning and relate it personally back to myself and my own beliefs. I truly enjoyed writing this piece because it made me think about what good writing really is. Good writing isn’t just a bunch of big meaningless words thrown on a page. Good writing is when the words on the page evoke the reader’s emotions and allow them to think in a way they never thought possible. That is what I learned by doing this piece of writing and that is why I believe it is so important. I think this piece of writing changed my thinking process for future assignments because I tried to write more personal and thought provoking essays… if I succeeded in doing that I have no idea.

"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance"

The This I Believe essay was basically based off of our personal credo. The one belief that I wrote about was that everyone should dance like nobody is watching. I like this piece of writing because it goes into more detail than my personal credo did. I liked that I was able to add a story with my belief so people would be able to get a better understanding of my belief. This essay really shows who I am as a person and how certain experiences in the past helped me to come up with this belief. I belief this essay shows where a lot of my other beliefs in my personal credo came from so maybe no it is a little more clear as to why I feel so strongly about respect and equality.

I really liked watching this speech and i enjoyed writing about it. I think this particular pece of writing shows how i am able to connect topics we learned in class to Randy's speech. I talk about his style, tone, genre and context.

This daybok entry was on a reading about the Steubenville rape case and women's equality. I think this piece of writing somewhat shows my own opinion on such a controversial topic. I also relate his piece of writing back to inquiry where I am able to compare the qualities of his writing to the qualities of an inquiry essay.

This daybook entry was the first draft of our topic proposal for our inquiry essay. In this piece of writing I explain my reasoning for choosing my topic and share a personal story. I think this piece of writing shows who I am as a person because you are able to see a side of me that I don't normally show. This was also the foundation of my inquiry essay where I sort of just jotted down some of my ideas.

I really enjoyed writing the Nacirema piece. I have never had to write anything like that before so it was pretty different. I think this particular piece of writing allowed us to think outside of the box and write about something that we wouldn't normally write about. I think it shows how not only me but my partners were able to challenge ourselves and expand our way of thinking.

I think this piece of writing shows how we were able to connect Vonnegut's piece of writing to concepts we learned in class such as thesis, style, and the definition and "good writing". It also shows what why definition of good writing is which I think is important.
